LE STRADE DEL VINO

(Many people ask me about tips and advice when travelling to Italy. I thought that if I published them here, one at a time, everyone could enjoy and share.)
" I'm presently looking into possible opportunities to help with harvesting at a winery in Italy next year to learn more about Italian varietals and local winemaking techniques. Do you have any suggestions about potential wineries that do this type of thing?" Wayne, Ottawa
The best thing to do is to talk to the ''consorzi'', which are central offices dealing with all the wineries in a certain wine area. They are not tourist offices; however, they'll connect you to the right people. Here are some in Tuscany that I have dealt with:
1) Strada del vino nobile (booking@stradavinonobile.it). This is the consorzium of the wine routes in Montepulciano.
Ask for Giulia and she'll be able to direct you to the right winery.
2) Consorzio, Bolgheri maria@lastradadelvino.com
This is the consortium in Bolgheri (the town in the heart of the 'supertuscans' area). Maria is the local wine guide of Maremma and is very knowledgeable on everything that happens in that region!
3) Donatella Cinelli Colombini, a producer of a great Brunello in the Montalcino area. (vino@cinellicolombini.it) Donatella is the past president of the Movimento Turismo del Vino, a wine tourism association, which includes hundreds of wineries. I am sure she knows where to send you!
Remember to plan well in advance for next year's harvest!
Good luck!
Antonio

Tired of the usual sparkling wine?
If the only wine you can think of when you want to offer an Italian bubbly aperitif, is Prosecco, then you need some new ideas!
Try this unique, great value, aromatic Malvasia, with the intense straw yellow colour that seems to come straight from the sun-washed hills on the Tyrrhenian sea, south of Rome.
Order your case through DiVino Wine Studio!
