LE STRADE DEL VINO
by Antonio Mauriello

Many people ask me about tips and advice when travelling to Italy. I thought that if I published them here, one at a time, everybody could enjoy and share.

"I am travelling to Italy next June and will be spending the majority of my time in Southern Italy, more specifically about an hour south of Paola in Calabria. If you have any suggestions for wineries I could visit while in the Calabria region, it would be very much appreciated!"
Nancy, Ottawa

It sounds like you will have a great time, and a very interesting and 'different' itinerary in Italy!
I travelled to Calabria often during my youth, camping and swimming in those pristine clear waters of the Mar Ionio, but I never visited any wineries.
However, I have tasted many wines that are produced with local Calabrese grape varieties, on different occasions, and noticed that you can find really good-valued products! Here is a list of the best wineries of Calabria, with the address, so that you can do some research on their location in advance and see if it is convenient for you to go for a visit. Listed below, in order, are: name of producer, town, province, web site:
- Boscarelli, Bisignano, Cosenza, www.viniboscarelli.it
- Crisera', Catona, Reggio Calabria, www.crisevini.it
- Enotria, Ciro' Marina, Crotone, www.cantinaenotria.com
- Fattoria San Francesco, Ciro', www.fattoriasanfrancesco.com
- Lento, Lamezia Terme, Catanzaro, www.cantinelento.it
- Librandi, Ciro' Marina, Crotone, www.librandi.it
- Spadafora, Mangone, Cosenza, www.cantinespadafora.it
- Zito, Ciro' Marina, Crotone, www.zito.it
- Roberto Ceraudo, Marina di Strongoli, Crotone (great place to spend the night after a fantastic dinner, Calabrese style!)
- Cantine De Luca, Melissa, Crotone
When you travel there, you will also be very close to Basilicata: a small, cute region, nested between Campania and Calabria. Don't forget to try all the Aglianico wines produced there!

Buona fortuna! (good luck!)

We discovered this great value during our research wine tasting that we hosted last October, in preparation for the Sicilian theme dinner. A group of us, "friends of DiVino Wine Studio", including instructors, chefs and students, get together from time to time to sample different wines and decide which ones would best match the menu offered at the following Italian regional theme dinner..
