What is the difference between the DOC and DOCG words that I often see on Italian wine labels?.
Alex, Ottawa
The Italian appellation system, a set of rules and by-laws, was introduced in the 60's to follow the French AOC
(Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) example and to help the 'confused' consumer to understand where the wine they were drinking actually came from.
DOC=Denominazione di Origine Controllata
DOCG=Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita
Both appellations regulate the geographical area of production and bottling, the grape percentage, the alcohol levels, production techniques and more.
The 'G' in DOCG protects consumers even more: the government releases a numbered label after checking - at the producer's site - that the wine actually conforms to the by-laws.
I hope this clarifies your doubts, Alex. Feel free to call me or write for any other questions!
Antonio
